Analysis of three pop music videos
Music video analysis
- ME! By Taylor swift
• This music video I have chose as it fits in with the song I’m doing for my music video. It follows traditional pop conventions and so can easily be compared with my chosen media text. The song ME! Is Taylor swifts newest single and is played repetitively on such radio stations such as BBC radio one. The music video links with the lyrics however follows a more performance based video style, however does still follow a loose narrative. The clear media conventions present in the music video is that it opens with colourful buildings. The music video features a small narrative before the song begins which shows Swift and Brendon Urie arguing, allowing for the song to fit in with the narrative. When the song reaches the chorus we see the outfit Swift is wearing change to a yellow suit, along with all the other dancers wearing unified suits which vary in bright colours. The music video features CGI in order to create things in the background such as rainbows, following this upbeat traditional music video style. Overall the music video switches scenes throughout and constantly features upbeat and colourful surroundings, allowing the video to achieve several pop music video conventions
- I don’t care by ed sheeran & Justin Bieber
• The music videos for this links in with swifts ME! With ed sheeran clearing using green screen with the lyrics clearly linking with the video with the words ‘don’t fit in’ having a clear influence over the video with both sheeran and bieber being put in situations in which they don’t fit in with bright colours constantly being used and the main focus of the video, with the pace of the song increasing we see more cuts in the video. The narrative goes from not fitting in at the start while to pace of the song is slower, to fitting in at the end with a faster pace of song. This fits with typical media conventions due to such things as the narrative and the bright colours
- Love me less by MAX
• The music video instantly applies to pop music video conventions with the artist of the song staring straight into the camera and lip syncing with contrasting colours being used to create a bright surrounding such as one shot using a bright yellow and the other shot a blue. This helps the music video as the cuts are clear with the contrasting colours. The narrative loosely applies to the lyrics about ‘love me less’ with MAX showing how he is really and the girlfriend getting angry about the mess, clearly loving him less. The music video also introduces all the people in the video at the start which is typical for pop music videos, however the song itself isn’t mainstream pop as its not currently played on stations such as BBC radio one, however does still accurately apply to most pop music conventions
